How a former child star transformed into a record-breaking hard rock frontwoman
In short: Taylor Momsen, once known for playing Cindy Lou Who, pivoted to music to become a powerhouse of modern rock. Her band, The Pretty Reckless, shattered industry records by becoming the first female-fronted group to land seven singles at the top of the Mainstream Rock chart, proving her musical staying power.
Formed in New York City in 2009, The Pretty Reckless initially struggled with trademark issues under their original name, The Reckless. Frontwoman Taylor Momsen, previously recognized for her acting roles in Gossip Girl and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, sought a distinct rock identity. She found a crucial creative partner in producer Kato Khandwala, who introduced her to lead guitarist Ben Phillips. This collaboration defined the band's trajectory, moving away from pop influences toward the gritty, blues-infused hard rock that would eventually define their sound.
The band's commercial breakthrough arrived with their second album, Going to Hell, released in 2014. It reached number five on the Billboard 200, fueled by singles like "Heaven Knows" and "Messed Up World (F'd Up World)." This success established them as a force in the rock genre, with Momsen drawing inspiration from her Catholic upbringing to explore complex themes. The band's resilience was tested in 2018 following the death of their longtime producer, Kato Khandwala, in a motorcycle accident. Momsen later described this period as a descent into a dark cycle of depression and substance abuse, from which music served as the primary grounding factor.
The band's fourth album, Death by Rock and Roll (2021), marked a historic milestone, propelling them to become the first female-fronted act with seven number-one singles on the Mainstream Rock chart. Their evolution has been marked by diverse stylistic shifts, incorporating elements of folk, country, and psychedelia alongside their signature hard rock foundation. By 2026, with the release of their fifth studio album, Dear God, the group solidified their status as a persistent, evolving entity in the rock landscape, having toured with legendary acts like AC/DC and Soundgarden.
