From NFL rushing leader to screen actor: the dual life of Thomas Jones
In short: After a 12-season NFL career that saw him amass over 10,000 rushing yards, Thomas Jones traded the gridiron for the film set. Now performing as Thomas Q. Jones, the former star running back has transitioned from breaking tackling records to building a career in acting.
Born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, Jones's work ethic was forged in Appalachia. His father insisted his seven children learn five new words daily and read the front page of newspapers before the sports section. This discipline translated to the field, where Jones became a consensus All-American for the Virginia Cavaliers in 1999 and was selected seventh overall in the 2000 NFL draft.
His professional journey spanned 12 seasons with teams including the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and New York Jets. He achieved significant milestones, including becoming the first brother tandem in NFL history to each rush for 1,000 yards in a single season alongside his brother, Julius, in 2006. He also joined the elite 10,000 rushing yards club, retiring ranked 27th in NFL history.
The physical toll of the game led Jones to make a profound decision: he pledged to donate his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute to study chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Reflecting on the physical consequences of the sport, Jones has stated that if he could do it over, he would not play football. Today, he manages his acting career under the name Thomas Q. Jones to satisfy SAG-AFTRA requirements, with credits including the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton.
Beyond the screen, Jones is the founder and CEO of technology company Castar Applications Inc. and owns the production company Independently Major Entertainment Films.
