How a $100 immigrant transformed the mechanics of global trading
In short: In 1965, Thomas Peterffy arrived in New York with no English and just $100. From those humble beginnings, he would go on to pioneer electronic trading, automate the American Stock Exchange, and build a multi-billion dollar financial empire built on the logic of efficiency.
Born in a Budapest hospital basement during a 1944 Russian air raid, Peterffy’s path to wealth was defined by a drive to automate processes. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1965 and working briefly as an architectural draftsman, he transitioned into computer programming. This technical background became his greatest edge in finance. Acquiring an American Stock Exchange seat in 1977, he subsequently established T.P. & Co. in 1978, which evolved into the global brokerage Interactive Brokers.
Peterffy’s influence on market structure is profound. In the early 1980s, he disrupted traditional trading floors by introducing handheld computers. He was also instrumental in 1999, persuading the SEC that U.S. options markets could be electronically linked to ensure better pricing for investors. His philosophy—that business is a collection of processes to be automated for maximum efficiency—led to the creation of one of the world's most cost-effective trading venues.
Beyond the trading floor, Peterffy's life is marked by significant political and personal shifts. A prominent donor to Republican and conservative causes, he famously funded million-dollar political ads in 2012 to warn against 'creeping socialism.' While his political support for Donald Trump has fluctuated—ranging from expressing hope for a brokered convention in 2023 to donating over $800,000 to the Trump 47 Committee in August 2024—his core conviction remains rooted in his experience of living in a socialist country. As of November 2025, his estimated net worth stands at $109 billion.
