In short: Before he was a franchise record-breaker, Timo Meier was a 15-year-old apprentice in Switzerland. His journey from the National A League to becoming the first player in San Jose Sharks history to score five goals in a single game is a masterclass in professional evolution.

Born in Herisau, Switzerland, on 8 October 1996, Timo Meier’s path to the NHL was defined by early, intensive immersion in the sport. At just 15, he secured an apprenticeship with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, a Swiss National A League team. This period allowed him to observe veterans like David Aebischer and Jason Spezza, providing a foundation for his move to the Canadian Hockey League in 2013. His transition to North American junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads brought significant physical challenges. At 16, weighing approximately 185 lb, Meier had to adapt to a more physical style of play against older opponents. The San Jose Sharks chose him ninth in the 2015 NHL entry draft, marking the third time a Swiss skater was picked by the club.

While his NHL debut was delayed by mononucleosis during the 2016–17 training camp, Meier eventually established himself as a premier offensive force. His career is marked by remarkable milestones, including a 27-game point streak in the QMJHL and a historic performance on 20 January 2022, when he became the first Shark to net five goals in one game. After seven seasons in San Jose, a 2023 trade sent him to the New Jersey Devils, where he signed a significant eight-year, $70.4 million extension in June 2023.

On the international stage, Meier has been a mainstay for the Swiss national team, earning silver medals at the 2018 and 2025 IIHF World Championships, and representing his country at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
