The coach who left his players with a single text message
In short: Todd Graham's coaching career is defined by dramatic turnarounds and even more dramatic exits. From winning Conference USA Coach of the Year to facing Senate inquiries over player mistreatment, his journey through college football is a rollercoaster of high-stakes victories and controversial departures.
Graham's tenure at Rice University in 2006 was a masterclass in rapid transformation. After the Owls finished 1–10 in 2005, Graham implemented a balanced attack that led the team to a 7–5 record and their first bowl game since 1961. This success earned him Coach of the Year honors, but his departure shortly after signing a contract extension sparked intense criticism. He achieved this turnaround by hiring Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator. This strategic shift replaced the previous triple option system with a more balanced offensive approach.
The controversy intensified during his time at the University of Pittsburgh. In December 2011, Graham resigned to accept a head coaching position at Arizona State after refusing permission to speak with the school. He informed his Pitt players of his departure via a forwarded text message, a move that left players like Lucas Nix feeling the team's trust had been betrayed. This sudden exit occurred after he had already discussed the Arizona State opportunity. His decision to leave for the Sun Devils caused significant friction with the university administration.
His time at the University of Hawaii was marked by significant achievement and even greater turmoil. While he secured his 100th career win and led the team to consecutive bowl games, his tenure ended abruptly in January 2022. Following allegations of player mistreatment—including reports of derogatory language directed at players—Graham resigned, stating it was best for his health and family. The controversy prompted a formal inquiry by the Hawaii State Senate in early 2022. During these proceedings, various players and family members provided testimony regarding his conduct.
By July 2024, Graham returned to the sidelines as an offensive analyst for TCU, bringing a defensive background to the Horned Frogs' offensive staff. In this new role, he works alongside head coach Sonny Dykes. His expertise is specifically utilised to assist the Horned Frogs' offensive unit.
