The tragic truth behind the boy in the third stall
In short: Rumors say Hanako-san is a girl who haunts the bathroom. But at Kamome Academy, the truth is far more complex. Beneath the supernatural legends lies the story of Amane Yugi, a boy whose past is marked by violence, broken fates, and a connection to the living that defies death.
In the halls of Kamome Academy, the 'Seven Wonders' are not merely ghost stories; they are supernatural entities tasked with maintaining the balance between the human world and the 'Far Shore.' The most famous, the Seventh Wonder, is known to students as Hanako-san of the Toilet. However, the reality is that Hanako is a boy, a spirit who can grant wishes in exchange for a price.
The identity of this spirit is tied to a tragic human history. Before becoming a supernatural, he was Amane Yugi, a middle school student in 1968. His life was defined by hardship; he frequently arrived at school with bruises and cuts from an unidentified abuser. Despite a passion for astronomy and dreams of reaching the Moon, his life ended violently when he killed his younger twin brother, Tsukasa.
This act of violence fundamentally altered his destiny, making him the only known person to have successfully changed his fate. Today, he serves as the leader of the Seven Wonders, wielding a kitchen knife and two spirit orbs known as haku-joudai. His existence is now inextricably linked to Nene Yashiro, a student who, after swallowing a mermaid's scale, became spiritually bound to him through the Mermaid's Curse.
The academy's supernatural ecosystem is governed by specific mechanics. Each Wonder possesses a 'Boundary'—a domain where their power is strongest—and a 'yorishiro,' a cherished object that serves as their source of power. While some wonders, like the Three Clock Keepers, manage time, others like the Fifth Wonder, Tsuchigomori, guard the records of students' lives. The stability of the school relies on the careful management of these rumors and the prevention of their destruction.
