Tour of Duty brought the Vietnam War to television with unprecedented combat realism
In short: Running from 1987 to 1990, Tour of Duty was the first television series to regularly depict American soldiers in combat in South Vietnam. While it began as a gritty chronicle of infantry life, the show later pivoted toward action and romance to compete with rival dramas, ultimately shaping its legacy.
Created by Steve Duncan and L. Travis Clark, the series debuted on CBS on September 24, 1987. It followed the second platoon of Bravo company, initially stationed at Camp Ladybird, as they conducted search and destroy missions. The show was notable for its willingness to tackle complex, often difficult subjects, including racism, drug abuse, fragging, suicide, and the lasting psychological toll of the Vietnam War on both soldiers and civilians.
The production underwent significant shifts over its three-season run. To reduce costs, filming moved from Hawaii to California for the second and third seasons. Simultaneously, the premise changed; the platoon was relocated to Tan Son Nhut near Saigon. Production staff later noted that pressure from CBS to incorporate female characters—a response to the success of the rival series China Beach—diluted the show's original focus on the life of the average combat infantryman, turning it into a more conventional action-drama.
By the third season, the show shifted again, moving the platoon into a SOG unit under Colonel Brewster, played by Carl Weathers. Despite its ambition and an Emmy Award-winning sound department, the series was cancelled in 1990. Its legacy has been complicated by music licensing issues; while the original broadcast featured iconic rock tracks like the Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black', many home video releases replaced these with soundalikes, drawing widespread protest from fans who valued the show's authentic period soundtrack.
