From High School Wide Receiver to NFL Safety: Xavier Woods' Defensive Evolution
In short: Xavier Woods didn't start his football journey on the defensive side of the ball. A versatile athlete who played wide receiver in high school, he transitioned to defense to become a standout safety, eventually carving out a professional career across three different NFL franchises.
Woods' transition to the defensive backfield began at West Monroe High School. While he spent his freshman year as a wide receiver, he moved to the defensive side as a sophomore, immediately making an impact by intercepting six passes—two of which he returned for touchdowns. This versatility paid off in his junior year, where he helped secure a state championship while recording 43 tackles and five interceptions. He eventually earned a scholarship to Louisiana Tech University, where he became a standout free safety, starting 10 of 12 games as a true freshman.
His collegiate career was defined by high-volume production. By his senior year at Louisiana Tech, Woods had amassed 181 tackles and 14 interceptions—the third-highest total in school history. He also set the school record for interception return yards with 325. During the 2017 NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys chose him as a sixth-round pick based on such figures. The Cowboys notably traded a 2018 fifth-round pick to the New York Jets specifically to acquire the draft slot used to select him.
In the NFL, Woods has navigated various roles and teams. He spent several seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2017–2020) before signing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 and later joining the Carolina Panthers in 2022. His professional journey has seen him play both free safety and nickelback roles, notably recording his first career sack during a 2021 game against the Cowboys. His career trajectory highlights a steady evolution from a multi-position high school prospect to a reliable veteran presence in the league's secondary.
