How a multi-sport phenom became the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history
In short: Before dominating the NFL trenches, Tristan Wirfs was a state wrestling champion and a discus thrower. His journey from a four-star recruit at Iowa to a record-breaking cornerstone for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a masterclass in physical evolution and elite-level consistency.
Tristan Wirfs' ascent began with a rare level of athletic versatility. At Mount Vernon High School, he was not merely a football player; he was a decorated multi-sport athlete, winning state titles in discus and shot put, and even securing a state wrestling title after a significant 30-pound weight cut. This foundation of strength was evident during his time with the Iowa Hawkeyes, where he broke the program's hang clean record with a massive 450-pound lift.
His transition to the professional ranks was swift and impactful. Selected 13th overall in the 2020 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wirfs immediately proved his worth. As a rookie, he started all 16 regular-season games and played a vital role in the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory. His ability to protect the quarterback was statistically staggering; by the 2024 season, he led the NFL with a 95.9% pass block win rate.
Beyond individual accolades, Wirfs has rewritten the history books regarding value and position. He became the first player in NFL history to earn first-team All-Pro honors at both the right tackle and left tackle positions. This unprecedented success culminated in a five-year, $140.63 million contract extension in August 2024, a landmark deal that established him as the highest-paid offensive lineman in the history of the league.
Despite facing setbacks, including ankle injuries and knee surgery in July 2025, his excellence remains constant. He has achieved five consecutive Pro Bowl selections, maintaining his status as one of the most formidable forces in professional football.
