The development process was notably protracted, as the team balanced this ambition with other major commitments, including 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Founder George Kamitani even personally funded the project when development costs threatened to exhaust the studio's resources.
The game centers on Prince Alain, who leads a resistance against the Zenoiran Empire. Players navigate an expansive overworld, managing resources like Valor and Honors to build armies and recruit allies. Combat occurs in real-time, requiring players to arrange units on a grid where character classes and positioning dictate tactical efficiency. While the core gameplay received widespread acclaim for its depth and customization, critics noted that the narrative relies on familiar fantasy tropes, though it gains complexity through its branching endings and character-driven side stories.
Artistically, the game stands out for its commitment to 2D visuals in an industry dominated by 3D graphics. The design draws from 14th-century European aesthetics mixed with Japanese fantasy, featuring diverse races and intricate character sprites. By September 2024, the title had surpassed one million copies sold worldwide. Despite its complex systems, which some reviewers found overwhelming, the game has been celebrated as a successful rebirth of classic tactical design, offering a blend of freedom and strategic challenge that resonates with genre enthusiasts.
