A world where humanity is extinct and the sky is the only refuge
In short: Five hundred years after the human race was wiped out by mysterious Beasts, the survivors live on floating islands. In this precarious existence, a man who has been petrified for five centuries awakens to find himself the only human left in a world of fairies and monsters.
Akira Kareno wrote the light novel series WorldEnd, which is called SukaSuka in Japan and features illustrations by Ue. On November 1, 2014, the series made its debut via the Sneaker Bunko imprint from Kadokawa Shoten. The original narrative concluded with the fifth volume in April 2016, though a sequel titled SukaMoka began publication that same month. The sequel series, known as SukaMoka, continues the saga. This expansion of the franchise follows the original's conclusion.
The setting is a post-apocalyptic landscape where the human race has been driven to extinction by creatures called Beasts. To avoid these predators, the surviving races inhabit floating islands in the sky. The story follows Willem Kmetsch, the series' protagonist and the only remaining human. Willem, known as the Black Agate Swordmaster, spent five hundred years in a petrified state under a frozen lake after being cursed by the deity Ebon Candle.
Because his body is too damaged to wield a Weapon, Willem serves as an adviser to the Leprechauns—a group of young girls capable of using ancient Dug Weapons to defend against the Beasts. Through his interactions with these girls, such as Chtholly, Ithea, Nephren, Rhantolk, Nopht, and Tiat, Willem navigates themes of family and protection in a world where life is fleeting and death is a constant threat. Other characters include the energetic Collon, the combat-ready Pannibal, and the shy Lakhesh. Additionally, the story features a goblin named Grick Graycrack and a Troll who seeks Willem's flesh.
