The heavy metal band that traded religious roots for mainstream gold
In short: From a high school project in Ocala to Billboard chart-toppers, Underoath navigated a tumultuous path of lineup shifts and identity crises. They survived internal friction over faith and commercial pressure to become one of the most successful acts in their genre, eventually abandoning their original musical approach.
Founded in 1997 by Dallas Taylor and Luke Morton, Underoath began as a high school project in Ocala, Florida. The band's name was derived from the Bible, and early years were marked by instability. While Taylor recorded the first three albums, he departed in 2003 under controversial conditions. This led to the recruitment of Spencer Chamberlain, whose arrival stabilized the group's internal dynamics so significantly that members initially considered forming a new band entirely before deciding to keep the Underoath name.
The band's commercial breakthrough arrived with 'They're Only Chasing Safety' in 2004. The album was a massive success, outselling their previous three records combined and selling nearly 100,000 copies in its first week. By late 2005, it had reached gold certification. This era also saw the band move into the mainstream spotlight with music videos receiving frequent airplay on MTV2 and Fuse, while simultaneously navigating intense internal arguments regarding their religious beliefs.
In 2006, 'Define the Great Line' debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Chart—the highest debut for a Christian album since 1997. Despite this success, the band faced significant strain; they famously dropped out of the Warped Tour in July 2006 to prioritize their personal friendships over touring demands. This period was also defined by rumors of substance abuse and health issues, including drummer Aaron Gillespie undergoing emergency surgery for a hand infection during an international tour.
