How a sudden X Factor recall transformed a trio into a pop phenomenon
In short: In 2012, Triple J was on the verge of elimination on The X Factor. But a sudden vacancy changed everything. By adding George Shelley to the group, they became Union J, a four-piece powerhouse that climbed the UK charts and captured a generation of fans.
The origins of Union J trace back to 2011, when Josh Cuthbert and Jaymi Hensley met while studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. They formed a trio alongside JJ Hamblett, performing as Triple J. Their path to stardom took a dramatic turn during the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012. After being eliminated from the competition, the group was offered a chance to return following the withdrawal of the group Rough Copy, provided they expanded into a four-piece by adding George Shelley. Before joining the competition, Cuthbert had previously auditioned for the fourth series of the show. The group initially performed Rihanna's hit "We Found Love" during their audition process.
This lineup change proved successful. After progressing through the live shows, the band signed with RCA Records and released their debut single, "Carry You," in June 2013, which reached number six on the UK charts. Their self-titled debut album followed in October 2013, peaking at number six. After joining Epic Records in 2014, the band released their second record, "You Got It All – The Album", which reached number 28 upon its debut. Their first single was recorded in London during early 2013. This second studio effort was released in December 2014.
The band's journey was marked by significant shifts. George Shelley departed in 2016, followed by Casey Johnson in 2017, leaving the group as a trio. Josh Cuthbert left in 2018, reducing the band to a duo before they ultimately disbanded in 2019. However, the legacy endured; on 31 January 2022, the group announced a tenth-anniversary reunion with the original members, releasing their third studio album, "Ten," in December 2022. The reunion included a special performance at the London Palladium. Their final studio album was released to mark a decade of music.
