How a global boy band turned martial arts and street dance into chart-topping success
In short: Formed by JYP Entertainment, the seven-member group Got7 blended acrobatic performance with pop music to captivate international audiences. From their 2014 debut to their departure from the agency in 2021, the band evolved from a hip-hop-focused act into a self-composing powerhouse, leaving a lasting mark on global music charts.
The formation of Got7 was a multi-year project that began after the success of the group 2PM. JYP Entertainment sought to create an international ensemble, eventually settling on a seven-member lineup that included artists from South Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Hong Kong. The group's name, chosen in December 2013, was inspired by the lucky number seven and the idea of seven individuals finding each other to succeed together. Their debut in January 2014 was marked by a distinct performance style that incorporated martial arts tricking and b-boying, drawing immediate comparisons to their senior labelmates, 2PM.
Throughout their career, the members transitioned from performers to active creators. By 2016, with the release of the album Flight Log: Turbulence, the members were contributing to the composition and lyrics of the majority of the tracks. This creative autonomy grew over time, with subsequent releases like 2017's 7 for 7 and 2018's Eyes On You featuring songs written and composed by the members themselves. This shift helped solidify their commercial standing, with the group achieving platinum certification from the Korean Music Content Association for Eyes On You and selling millions of copies across their discography.
The band's reach extended well beyond South Korea, with significant activity in the Japanese market and global brand ambassadorships. They signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan in 2014 and released multiple Japanese-language albums, including Moriagatteyo in 2016. Their influence was further bolstered by their presence in web dramas, educational television, and high-profile partnerships with brands like Adidas and Shinsegae Duty Free. By the time their contract with JYP Entertainment expired in January 2021, the group had established a legacy as a versatile act capable of topping Billboard's World Albums Chart and maintaining a dedicated international following.
