In short: At the Virginia Military Institute, every athlete is also a cadet. This dual identity fuels a football program with roots stretching back to the 19th century, defined by intense military rivalries and seasons interrupted by unexpected outbreaks of disease.

A 'three-legged stool' framework guides the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), integrating academics, athletics, and military training. Under this principle, every athlete is a cadet and every cadet is an athlete. Approximately 30% of the Corps of Cadets participates in NCAA Division I athletics, a commitment that integrates physical competition into their military development.

VMI's football history is marked by both early dominance and unexpected disruptions. While the program played its first recorded game in 1873, it saw significant success in the late 1800s, including undefeated seasons in 1892 and 1894. However, the 1899 season was cut short when an outbreak of typhoid fever forced all cadets to return home, leaving the team with only a single victory.

The Keydets currently participate in the NCAA Division I FCS Southern Conference. Their most significant rivalry is with The Citadel, a matchup dubbed 'The Military Classic of the South' in 1976. This designation identifies both colleges as the final two all-military institutions in the South. The winner of this intense series claims the Silver Shako trophy, a prize currently held by The Citadel.

The program's lineage is deeply intertwined with the Institute's history. For instance, the first organized football squad in 1891 was led by Walter H. Taylor, whose son, Walter Taylor III, would later serve as coach. This connection between leadership and athletics remains a cornerstone of the VMI mission to develop the whole person.
