In short: Most college mascots are invented for branding, but the Western Illinois Leathernecks have a unique pedigree. Their identity isn't just a stylistic choice; it is a formal permission granted by the United States Navy, making them a singular case in American collegiate athletics.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks represent a unique intersection of collegiate sports and military history. While many schools adopt fierce imagery, Western Illinois is the only college that officially takes its nickname from a specific branch of the U.S. military. This distinction dates back to 1927, when the program's coach, Ray Hanson, sought to formalize the team's identity.

Hanson, who was a decorated officer in the United States Marine Corps, took the initiative to request permission from the U.S. Navy. He wanted to use the 'Fighting Leathernecks' nickname and logo associated with the Marine Corps. The Navy granted this request, cementing a permanent link between the Macomb, Illinois, campus and the military's storied branding. Competing within the Ohio Valley Conference, the squad is presently part of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

The program's history predates this formal branding. During 1902, an informal group was founded by the college, facing the Western Illinois Normal & Business Institute and four local high schools. However, the official beginning of the program is recognized as 1903, when the school formed an athletic association for the fall season. Today, the Leathernecks play their home games at Hanson Field, which has a capacity of 16,368 seats.

The program has seen significant structural shifts in recent years. From 2008 through 2023, the team was a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. In a coordinated move, the other Leathernecks athletic programs joined the Ohio Valley Conference on July 1, 2023, with the football team following suit in 2024.
