How a single expansion team reshaped the NBA's Western landscape
In short: The NBA's Western Conference is more than just a collection of teams; it is a carefully balanced ecosystem. From the arrival of a 30th franchise to the renaming of legendary trophies, discover how the league's divisional structure evolved to create the modern era of basketball.
The current structure of the Western Conference, consisting of 15 teams divided into the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest Divisions, is not a permanent fixture. A significant shift occurred at the start of the 2004–05 season. This realignment was triggered by the introduction of the NBA's 30th franchise, which began play as the Charlotte Bobcats (now the Charlotte Hornets). The conference operates alongside its counterpart, the Eastern Conference, to form the core of the NBA. This structure organizes the league's talent into three distinct groups: the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest Divisions.
This expansion necessitated a complex reshuffling of existing teams. Most notably, the New Orleans Pelicans—operating as the New Orleans Hornets at the time—were moved from the Eastern Conference's Central Division into the newly established Southwest Division. This move helped solidify the conference's modern divisional alignment, which has remained in place for two decades.
The conference's identity is also defined by its honors. While the league has long recognized excellence, the Western Conference championship trophy was only first awarded during the 2000–01 season. In a tribute to the league's history, the trophy was renamed in the 2021–22 season to honor Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson.
The 2021–22 season also brought recognition to individual brilliance within the conference finals. The league introduced the Earvin "Magic" Johnson Trophy, awarded to the Western Conference Finals Most Valuable Player. This follows a tradition of honoring legends like Robertson and Johnson, ensuring the conference's competitive history is inextricably linked to the Hall of Famers who shaped the game.
