The 2020 collapse of the Scottish Junior football pyramid
In short: When a long-standing football structure broke down in 2020, it left hundreds of clubs in limbo. The solution was a massive, rapid reorganization that birthed a new senior league, transforming the landscape of West of Scotland football overnight.
For years, discussions were underway to integrate the Scottish Junior Football Association (SJFA) clubs into the senior pyramid structure below the SPFL. However, these talks officially broke down in early 2020. In response, the Lowland and East of Scotland leagues invited interested clubs to form a new West of Scotland league at tier 6. By February 2020, a majority of SJFA West Region clubs had expressed interest, leading to the formal approval of 67 applications on April 14, 2020.
The transition was fraught with logistical and legal hurdles. While some clubs initially expected a flat conference format to accommodate all 67 members at once, the Scottish Football Association mandated a hierarchical structure consisting of a top tier and lower divisions. This led to a 20-team Premier Division for the 2020–21 season, with the remaining teams distributed into three balanced conferences. The league even experimented with a two-phase season in September 2020 before reverting to a standard home and away format due to withdrawals.
Today, the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) serves as a senior feeder to the Lowland Football League, currently hosting 80 member clubs across five divisions. It covers a vast geography including Glasgow, Ayrshire, and Lanarkshire, with two clubs even based in Dumfries and Galloway. The league continues to navigate its identity, with 53 of its clubs remaining members of the SJFA while competing in the senior pyramid, balancing historical affiliations with modern league requirements.
