The Italian-Danish singer who defined 1990s European pop music
In short: Before she was a household name, Sannie Charlotte Carlson lived in Africa and worked as a model. It wasn't until she teamed up with producer Larry Pignagnoli that she adopted the moniker Whigfield, launching a career of massive international hits across Europe.
Born in Skælskør, Denmark, in 1970, Sannie Charlotte Carlson’s path to pop stardom was non-linear. Her early life included several years spent in Africa before she returned to Denmark to study music and pursue a career in modeling. It was only after performing in a duo that she met producer Larry Pignagnoli, the partnership that would eventually lead her to adopt the stage name Whigfield.
The collaboration with Pignagnoli proved immensely successful in the early 1990s. Based in Italy at the time, Carlson released 'Saturday Night' in 1993, which became an international hit the following year and reached the top five in Italy. She followed this success with 'Another Day,' which peaked at number three in her home country of Italy.
Whigfield's reach extended far beyond Italian borders. The United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, and Denmark all saw 'Another Day' and 'Think of You' reach their top ten positions. She also saw success with 'Sexy Eyes' across various markets. By December 1995, her final UK Top 40 hit was a combination of an original composition, 'Big Time,' paired with a cover of 'Last Christmas.'
Despite her early dominance in the pop charts, Carlson continued to engage with the music industry decades later. In 2018, she competed in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with the song 'Boys on Girls,' though this latest venture did not see her qualify for the superfinal.
