From Philadelphia's high school gyms to the global stage of professional wrestling
In short: Born to a Navy master chief petty officer and a Japanese mother, Paul Soren Gruber has transformed into the intense Wheeler Yuta. From his early days in Combat Zone Wrestling to becoming a multi-time ROH Pure Champion, his journey through the wrestling world is a masterclass in evolution and resilience.
Born in Philadelphia on October 26, 1996, Paul Soren Gruber’s path to professional wrestling was shaped by a diverse upbringing. After moving to South Carolina and graduating from Carolina Forest High School, he returned to Philadelphia to earn a degree from Villanova University. His professional journey began in 2014, leading to a steady climb through the independent circuit and major promotions. His early career included a debut for Major League Wrestling in 2017. Before finding major success, he also competed for Combat Zone Wrestling throughout 2015 and 2016.
Yuta has become a central figure in All Elite Wrestling (AEW), most notably as a member of the Blackpool Combat Club, which later evolved into the Death Riders. His career is defined by high-stakes shifts in loyalty, such as his 2022 turn toward Bryan Danielson's faction and his subsequent 2024 return to the group's side after a period of conflict. His career also includes notable stints with New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Furthermore, he has expanded his reach into Mexico by competing in CMLL.
His championship pedigree is extensive. He has held the ROH Pure Championship on three separate occasions, including a record-setting third reign that began on November 25, 2024. Additionally, he has captured the AEW World Trios Championship alongside teammates Pac and Claudio Castagnoli, proving his versatility in both singles and tag team competition. Beyond his title wins, he has also held the IWTV Independent Wrestling World Championship. He was even recognised as one of the top 500 singles wrestlers in 2022.
