The low-speed chase that captivated nearly 100 million television viewers
In short: On June 17, 1994, a white Ford Bronco became the center of a global media spectacle. As the vehicle drifted through Los Angeles freeways, the world watched live, even as NBA Finals coverage was interrupted to broadcast the slow-moving pursuit of a football legend.
The chase began around 5:56 p.m. when Al Cowlings, a former teammate of O.J. Simpson, drove the 1993 white Ford Bronco XLT through Southern California. Simpson, a former football star and spokesperson for Ford, was reportedly in the backseat holding a gun to his own head. The pursuit spanned roughly two hours, winding through the Santa Ana, Artesia, and San Diego freeways before ending at Simpson's Brentwood estate at 7:57 p.m.
This event was a watershed moment for television, with approximately 95 million to 100 million people tuning in to watch the live broadcast. An audience of roughly 95 million watched the live pursuit, which even halted Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Houston Rockets and the New York Knicks. The imagery of the chase, captured by up to 22 telecopters, fundamentally changed how news was consumed and set the stage for the intense media scrutiny of Simpson's subsequent murder trial.
The legal fallout was profound. Following the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman on June 12 or 13, Simpson was declared a fugitive. Although a jury acquitted him of the murders in October 1995, a 1997 civil trial found him liable for the deaths, ordering him to pay $33.5 million in damages. Today, the vehicle from the chase is on loan to the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Tennessee.
The Bronco itself has a storied afterlife. After the chase, Cowlings sold the car to Starifacts for $75,000—a massive premium over its $1,800 Kelley Blue Book value. It was later kept in a private garage for years to ensure it remained in running condition, having added only about 20 miles to its odometer since the incident.
