In short: From scoring on his professional debut to battling through significant ACL and hamstring injuries, Will Smallbone's career is a testament to physical and mental endurance. Discover how this Southampton academy product navigated the highs of Premier League promotion and the lows of long-term injury layoffs.

Born in England on 21 February 2000, William Anthony Patrick Smallbone emerged from the Southampton academy as a promising central midfielder. His professional ascent began in early 2020, marked by a goal on his debut against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup and a subsequent Premier League appearance against Aston Villa. However, his momentum was severely interrupted on 16 January 2021, when an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a match against Leicester City threatened to sideline him for six months.

Smallbone's resilience was tested not only on the pitch but also personally; while recovering from his ACL injury in 2021, he was diagnosed with alopecia. This led him to become an ambassador for Alopecia UK in December 2022. On the field, he continued to find success through various loan spells, notably at Stoke City during the 2022–23 season, where he made 46 appearances under manager Alex Neil.

The midfielder played a pivotal role in Southampton's recent successes, including scoring in the EFL Championship play-off semi-final against West Bromwich Albion in May 2024 and providing an assist in the final against Leeds United to secure promotion to the Premier League. Despite facing recurring hamstring issues and a period of being released by Southampton following the 2025–26 season, he secured a three-year contract with Leicester City on 1 October 2026.

Internationally, Smallbone represents the Republic of Ireland, a connection made through his mother, who was born in Kilkenny. He has progressed through the U21 ranks, notably scoring a brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2022, to earning a senior debut against Latvia in March 2023, where he was named Player of the Match.
