From free transfer to a potential £20 million striker
In short: In just a few years, Will Lankshear has transformed from a released Arsenal youth player into one of English football's most expensive prospects. His rapid ascent through the academy ranks reveals the high-stakes mechanics of the modern transfer market.
The trajectory of Will Lankshear's career is a masterclass in rapid development. After being released by Arsenal's youth system, Lankshear joined Sheffield United in February 2021 on a scholarship. His impact was immediate; he captained the club to a second-division title for their under-18s during the 2021–22 campaign and finished as the league's top scorer. His clinical nature in front of goal—earning him the nickname 'poacher'—made him a prime target for Premier League scouts.
The financial scale of his rise became evident on 31 August 2022, when Tottenham Hotspur secured his services for an initial £2 million. While £1 million of that fee was guaranteed, the total package was expected to climb to £2.5 million through performance bonuses. Lankshear's time at Spurs was marked by prolific scoring, including 23 goals in the 2023–24 Premier League 2 season, which earned him the league's Player of the Season honors.
Lankshear's journey has since been defined by strategic loan spells to gain senior experience. He moved to West Bromwich Albion in early 2025, followed by a season at Oxford United, where he was named the club's Young Player of the Season despite their relegation. By July 2026, his market value reached new heights when he signed a five-year deal with Middlesbrough. The transfer was reported at approximately £10 million, with the potential to reach a club-record £20 million if specific milestones are achieved.
