The catcher who turned a $1.775 million bonus into a $140 million legacy
In short: In 2016, the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted a young Kentucky standout with a promising swing. Fast forward to 2024, and Will Smith has become a cornerstone of a dynasty, securing a massive decade-long extension and etching his name alongside baseball legends through historic power hitting.
William Dills Smith’s ascent from the University of Louisville to Major League stardom is marked by remarkable milestones. After being selected in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft, Smith signed for a $1.775 million bonus. His professional journey saw rapid progression through the minor leagues, including stints with the Ogden Raptors and the Great Lakes Loaks, before his 2019 debut against the New York Mets.
Smith has become a central figure in the Dodgers' recent championship era, winning World Series titles in 2020, 2024, and 2025. His ability to perform in high-leverage moments is legendary; he famously hit an 11th-inning home run in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series to secure the title. He also holds the distinction of being the third catcher in history to hit four home runs in four consecutive at-bats, joining Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and Benito Santiago.
Beyond the diamond, Smith’s impact is felt through his philanthropy and international play. Alongside his wife, Cara, he co-founded the Catching Hope Foundation in 2021 to support youth education. He also represented the United States in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he hit a solo home run against Team Mexico. Despite facing injuries, such as a hairline fracture in 2025, his consistent production has made him one of the most decorated catchers in franchise history.
