In short: Born in Angola and raised in Portugal, William Carvalho’s career has been defined by resilience. From surviving a training ground attack to overcoming major injuries, the defensive midfielder has navigated the intense pressures of elite European football to become a decorated international champion.

William Silva de Carvalho’s journey began in Luanda, Angola, before his family moved to Portugal when he was a young child. His footballing lineage is deep; his uncle Afonso and grandfather Praia both played for the Angolan club Progresso Associação do Serbanzanga. After honing his skills on the streets, Carvalho entered the Sporting CP youth system at age 13, eventually making his professional debut in April 2011.

A mainstay in the Sporting CP midfield, Carvalho’s tenure in Lisbon was marked by both silverware and significant hardship. He won the 2015 Taça de Portugal and earned the Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year award for the 2013–14 season. However, his time in Portugal also saw him endure a period of intense violence in May 2018, when approximately 50 supporters attacked the Sporting training ground, leaving Carvalho and several teammates injured.

His move to Real Betis in July 2018 marked a new chapter in Spain. During his seven seasons in La Liga, he became a record-breaking figure, making 223 competitive appearances—the most for any foreign player at the club. He secured the 2022 Copa del Rey during this period, though his later years were hampered by physical setbacks, including a spinal disc herniation in 2019 and a complete Achilles tendon rupture in September 2024.

On the international stage, Carvalho has been a vital component of the Portuguese national team. He has represented his country at three World Cups and two European Championships, most notably contributing to Portugal's victory at Euro 2016. Despite being eligible for Angola, he chose to represent Portugal, a decision that saw him compete at the highest levels of the global game.
