In short: Before they were icons of global sport, Venus and Serena Williams were children in Compton training in parks controlled by gangs. Their journey from dodging gunfire to dominating the world's most exclusive courts is a masterclass in discipline, grit, and a father's radical vision for his daughters.

The sisters' path to stardom began with an unconventional catalyst: their father, Richard Williams. After seeing a French Open broadcast, he wasn't moved by the athleticism but by the $40,000 prize money. He decided to mold Venus and Serena into champions, beginning their training in the early 1980s while they were still in strollers. The sisters skipped the traditional junior ranks entirely, turning professional remarkably early—Venus at age 14 in 1994, followed by Serena a year later.

Their upbringing was defined by extreme physical and environmental demands. In Compton, Richard frequently engaged in physical altercations with gang members to secure court time, eventually suffering broken ribs and losing ten teeth in the process. The girls endured grueling sessions starting at 6 a.m., sometimes performing 500 volleys for a single rest. They trained through gunshots and faced taunts from other children, developing what coach Rick Macci described as a 'burning desire' to never let a ball past them.

The results were historic. In 2002, they became the first sisters in history to occupy the world No. 1 and No. 2 singles rankings simultaneously. Collectively, they have won 122 singles titles and over $175 million in prize money. Beyond their rivalry—which included four consecutive major finals between 2002 and 2003—they were also a powerhouse doubles team, winning 22 titles together. Their legacy is one of both athletic dominance and cultural disruption, opening a historically white sport to a multicultural audience.

Today, their influence extends into business through ventures like Serena Ventures and EleVen. In 2016, the sisters returned to Compton to have their original training courts rebuilt in their honor, cementing a journey that began with broken glass and ended with global trophies.
