How a rapid growth spurt fueled a controversial rugby league career
In short: Willie Mason was a physical phenomenon. Between ages 16 and 17, he grew to 6 feet 5 inches and 115 kilograms naturally, without weight training. This genetic surge propelled him to international rugby, but his high-profile career was defined as much by off-field drama as his dominance on the field.
Born in Auckland to an Australian father and a Tongan-Samoan mother, Mason's physical development was nothing short of extraordinary. In his late teens, he experienced a massive growth spurt, reaching 196 cm and 115 kg (254 lb) through genetics alone, rather than gym work. This natural power made him a formidable force in the National Rugby League (NRL), particularly during his tenure with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Before his massive growth spurt, he was a versatile backline player. He also excelled as a track athlete, competing in the 100 and 200 metre sprints.
Mason's career reached a pinnacle in 2004 when he won the Clive Churchill Medal as Man of the Match in the Grand Final, helping the Bulldogs defeat the Sydney Roosters 16–13. However, his time with the Bulldogs was marked by significant controversy. In 2003, he was fined $25,000 after testing positive for an illicit social drug, reported to be an amphetamine. He was also involved in incidents involving unprofessional behavior and leaving team hotels. His disciplinary issues extended to public conduct, including an incident involving a taxi fare. He was also fined for urinating in a public space.
His career was a journey of high stakes and shifting loyalties. Despite his desire to play for his hometown Newcastle Knights, a club policy against former Super League players forced him to move to Sydney. He eventually represented both Australia and Tonga internationally. Even as his talent remained evident—earning him interest from the NFL's New York Giants and various clubs in France and Japan—his career was frequently interrupted by fines, legal issues, and injuries, such as a ruptured ACL in 2008. His professional path included stints with the Sydney Roosters and the North Queensland Cowboys. He also played in the Super League for Hull Kingston Rovers.
