The only player to start a historic five-game interception streak
In short: In the high-stakes world of NFL defense, Xavier McKinney achieved a feat of ball-hawking rarely seen in modern history. By achieving five straight picks within five weeks for a fresh club, he became the initial athlete to do so since 1970, entering a small group of top-tier performers.
Xavier McKinney's arrival with the Green Bay Packers in 2024 sparked one of the most statistically anomalous defensive stretches in recent memory. Starting in Week 1, McKinney began a streak of interceptions that lasted through Week 5. This feat placed him in an exclusive club of only four players in NFL history to record a pick in each of their first four games with a new franchise. McKinney's journey to this milestone was marked by significant physical adversity. During his tenure with the New York Giants, he suffered a fractured foot in 2020 that sidelined him for the first ten games of his rookie season, and later faced a broken hand in 2022 following an ATV accident.
Despite these setbacks, his progression was steady; he transitioned from a backup at Alabama to a high-volume starter, eventually earning a first-team All-Pro selection and a Pro Bowl nod in January 2025. The mechanics of his success lie in his versatility as a safety. In 2023, he was one of only two defenders in the entire NFL to not miss a single snap for the duration of the season. This durability, combined with his ability to create turnovers, led to him finishing the 2024 season with eight interceptions—the second-highest total in the league. His move to Green Bay in March 2024 saw him sign a four-year, $67 million contract, solidifying his status as a premier playmaker.
