The man who redefined speed at the NFL Combine
In short: In 2024, Xavier Worthy clocked a 4.21-second 40-yard dash, shattering a long-standing record. But his journey from a standout Texas Longhorn to a first-round NFL draft pick is defined by more than just raw, explosive velocity.
Xavier Worthy’s ascent to the professional stage was marked by record-breaking performances at the University of Texas. During his 2021 freshman season, he fundamentally rewrote the school's record books. He surpassed the previous freshman marks held by Roy Williams—who had 809 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2000—by recording 981 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. His single-game dominance was equally notable, specifically a 261-yard performance against rival Oklahoma.
His collegiate career was characterized by remarkable consistency and versatility. As a sophomore, Worthy maintained a 25-game streak of catching at least one pass, the eighth-longest such streak in Texas history. By his junior year, he had become an NCAA leader in punt return yardage, totaling 371 yards. This progression led him to forgo his senior year on January 2, 2024, to enter the NFL draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Worthy with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 draft, a selection acquired via a trade with the Buffalo Bills. His professional impact was immediate; on September 5, 2024, he scored a 21-yard touchdown on his very first NFL touch. He later set a Super Bowl record for receiving yards by a rookie with 157 yards in Super Bowl LIX, surpassing the 109-yard mark previously shared by Torry Holt and Chris Matthews.
Despite his athletic achievements, Worthy's career has faced significant hurdles. Beyond a dislocated shoulder sustained during a collision with Travis Kelce in São Paulo, his personal life faced scrutiny following a March 2025 arrest involving allegations of assault, though those specific charges were dropped the following day.
