From martial arts mastery to the pinnacle of K-pop stardom
In short: Before he became a global idol, Xiumin was a martial arts practitioner with a black belt in Kendo and Taekwondo. His journey from a rejected audition to a multi-hyphenate star reveals a path of discipline, diverse artistic exploration, and a unique evolution in the music industry.
Xiumin, born Kim Min-seok on March 26, 1990, in Seoul, began his professional journey with a significant hurdle: a rejection from JYP Entertainment in 2008. He pivoted to SM Entertainment, where he won second place in the Everysing Contest and entered the trainee system. He eventually debuted as the seventh member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo in April 2012, later forming the sub-unit Exo-CBX with Chen and Baekhyun in October 2016.
His artistic identity is deeply rooted in his name; 'Xiumin' combines the Chinese reading of the hanja character 'xiù' (meaning great or show) with a portion of his birth name. Beyond music, his background is notably athletic. He trained in Wushu and Fencing and holds a black belt in both Kendo and Taekwondo. This physical discipline likely informs his versatile career, which spans musical theatre, film, and reality television. For instance, he played a lead role in the 2015 web drama 'Falling for Challenge,' which became the most-watched web drama in South Korea that year, reaching 20 million views in just 17 days.
Xiumin's career is marked by complex industry dynamics and a commitment to solo growth. In 2023, he and two other members resolved a contract dispute with SM Entertainment regarding overdue payments and unreasonable deals. This led to a strategic shift in 2024, where he joined Baekhyun's label, INB100, to manage his solo activities while remaining with SM for Exo. His recent discography, including the 2022 EP 'Brand New' and the 2025 EP 'Interview X,' showcases a transition toward retro sonic styles and diverse pop-dance genres.
