Yelberton Abraham Tittle Jr.’s career was a masterclass in longevity and reinvention. After a stellar collegiate career at LSU—highlighted by a shared MVP award in the 1947 'Ice Bowl'—Tittle entered the professional ranks in 1948 with the Baltimore Colts of the AAFC. Following the franchise's collapse, he joined the San Francisco 49ers, where he became a cornerstone of the 'Million Dollar Backfield' and the first professional football player to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1954.
While his time in San Francisco was marked by brilliance, including leading the league in touchdown passes in 1955, his most improbable chapter began in 1961. Traded to the New York Giants, Tittle was widely expected to fade. Instead, he orchestrated one of the most prolific eras in Giants history. In 1962, he set a single-season record with 33 touchdown passes, and in 1963, at age 37, he pushed that record even higher to 36 touchdowns.
Tittle's impact extended beyond the stat sheet. He is credited with coining the term 'alley-oop' to describe a high-arcing pass to receiver R.C. Owens. Despite facing immense physical tolls—including playing through a knee injury in the 1963 Championship Game—he retired as the NFL's all-time leader in nearly every major passing category. His legacy is immortalized in the Hall of Fame and by the retirement of his number 14 by the Giants.
