A legendary Chinese military strategist finds his second act in a Tokyo nightclub
In short: Zhuge Kongming, the brilliant chancellor of Shu Han, dies in 234 and wakes up in modern Shibuya. Instead of commanding armies, he applies his ancient tactical genius to a new battlefield: the Japanese music industry, where he helps an aspiring singer named Eiko Tsukimi reach stardom.
The manga series Ya Boy Kongming!, written by Yuto Yotsuba and illustrated by Ryo Ogawa, reimagines the historical figure Zhuge Liang as a man transported from the Three Kingdoms period to contemporary Tokyo. Upon his arrival at a Halloween party, he discovers a world free from the bloodshed of his past life. He soon encounters Eiko Tsukimi, a struggling singer working at the BB Lounge. Moved by her music, the strategist pledges his intellect to her career, orchestrating complex plans to navigate the competitive music landscape.
The narrative explores the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern ambition. Kongming’s strategies prove effective in the digital age, helping Eiko and other artists like the band Azalea overcome professional stagnation. By leveraging his high intellect, he manages to secure Eiko's place in the industry, eventually leading to the founding of the Fourth Kingdom record label. The story highlights themes of artistic authenticity and resilience, as characters like the rapper Kabe and the band members of Azalea find renewed purpose through their collaboration with the strategist.
Since its debut on the Comic Days website in December 2019, the series has expanded into a multimedia franchise. It has been adapted into an anime by P.A. Works, a live-action television drama on Fuji TV, and a stage play. By August 2026, the manga had reached 26 collected volumes, with over 1.2 million copies in circulation as of October 2022. The series has received recognition including the Next Manga Award's U-Next award in 2020, cementing its status as a unique blend of historical fiction and contemporary music drama.
