A 50-year odyssey across five eras of Japanese history
In short: How do you capture five decades of cultural evolution in a single journey? This upcoming title follows a Japanese-American outcast as he navigates five distinct cities and eras, from 1915 to 1965, tracing the origins of a legendary criminal organization while weaving a tapestry of music and memory.
Developed by RGG Studio and published by Sega, Stranger Than Heaven is a prequel to the Like a Dragon franchise. It follows Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American orphan who stows away from San Francisco to seek a new life in Japan. The narrative spans over 50 years, beginning in 1915 in Kokura and concluding in 1965 in Shinjuku. The game serves as a foundational origin story, depicting how Daito eventually becomes the founder of the Tojo Clan, a central organization in the main series.
The game employs a unique mechanical approach to history and atmosphere. Players explore five locales—Kokura (1915), Kure (1929), Minami (1943), Atami (1951), and Shinjuku (1965)—where they can collect sounds to create original musical compositions with in-game composers. To maintain authenticity, the developers opted for a single audio track where Japanese and English are used interchangeably based on context, rather than offering separate language tracks. This reflects the diverse backgrounds of the cast, which includes notable figures like Snoop Dogg and late actors Bunta Sugawara and Tupac Shakur.
While the game is grounded in historical settings, studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama clarified that the locations are not exact replicas of real-life counterparts. The development prioritized original play spaces over historical accuracy, intentionally omitting real historical events unless they directly impacted Daito's personal story. This distinction ensures the game functions as a focused character study rather than a documentary. The project was originally conceived as a trilogy but was condensed into a single title to provide a continuous, non-fragmented experience for the player.
The production involved significant logistical coordination, including a six-to-seven-year development cycle for the main story. A notable point of contention involved the inclusion of deceased actors' likenesses, which required permission from their estates and a commitment from the studio not to use generative AI for their voices. The game is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with a live-action film adaptation by Netflix already in development as of September 2026.
