The sugar mill workers who built a Mexican football dynasty
In short: Founded in 1948 by workers of the Emiliano Zapata sugar mill, Zacatepec F.C. rose from local agricultural roots to become a powerhouse of Mexican football. Led by legendary manager Ignacio Trelles, the 'Cañeros' secured multiple national titles and even defeated international giants like Manchester United.
The origins of Zacatepec F.C. are deeply rooted in the local economy of Morelos. This agricultural connection is preserved today in the club's nickname, 'Cañeros,' and its traditional white and green colors, representing sugar and sugarcane. The club's identity is further reflected in its motto, 'Hacer Deporte es Hacer Patria', which translates to doing sports is to be a patriot.
The club's golden era arrived in the 1950s under the guidance of Ignacio Trelles. After earning promotion to the Primera División de México in 1951, the club achieved unprecedented success for the state of Morelos. They secured their first league title in 1955 and followed it with another in 1957, just ahead of Toluca. During this decade, the club also won the 1956–57 Copa México and participated in high-profile international friendlies, defeating clubs such as Nacional and Manchester United. The team's home matches are played at the Agustín 'Coruco' Díaz stadium, a venue inaugurated in 1954 by President Adolfo López Mateos. This facility is famously nicknamed 'la selva cañera' due to the local humid climate.
Trelles' influence extended beyond the club; he later managed the Mexico national team during the 1962 and 1966 FIFA World Cups. Despite this storied past, the club has faced significant volatility, including multiple relegations and periods of dissolution. After various rebrandings and franchise relocations, the club was refounded in July 2024 as Zacatepec F.C., currently competing in the Liga Premier – Serie A. The club's recent history has been marked by several franchise shifts and relocations. Following a brief hiatus for restructuring, the team was refounded in 2024 and currently competes in the Liga Premier – Serie A.
