In short: He didn't even play football until middle school, yet he rose through the ranks of the Michigan Wolverines and UCLA Bruins to become a second-round NFL draft pick. Discover the journey of a powerhouse running back who transformed raw talent into professional dominance.

Born in 2001 in Camarillo, California, Zach Charbonnet’s path to professional football was unconventional. Unlike many elite prospects who train from childhood, Charbonnet did not begin playing the sport until the seventh grade. His high school years at Oaks Christian School saw him amass 4,741 rushing yards and 62 touchdowns, with a particularly dominant junior season featuring 2,049 yards and 23 scores. His heritage is equally diverse, as his mother immigrated to the United States from France and is of Chinese and Cambodian descent. His father, Mark, is African-American.

His collegiate career was marked by significant transitions and resilience. After committing to the University of Michigan in 2018, he faced an early setback with knee surgery in January 2019. Despite this, he set a Michigan freshman record with 11 touchdowns in 2019. Seeking a new chapter, he transferred to UCLA in 2021, where he became a standout performer. During his 2022 senior season, he recorded 1,359 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, earning first-team All-American honors. During his time with the Bruins, he earned the title of conference newcomer of the year from the Associated Press. He also achieved a season total of 1,680 all-purpose yards, which stands as one of the highest single-season marks in UCLA history.

Charbonnet entered the NFL in 2023, selected 52nd overall in the second round by the Seattle Seahawks. His professional trajectory has been defined by both high-impact plays and physical adversity. While he has achieved milestones like his first multi-touchdown game against the Miami Dolphins and a Super Bowl LX victory against the New England Patriots, he also faced a season-ending ACL tear in January 2026. Despite such setbacks, his ability to contribute to the Seahawks' offense remains a cornerstone of his professional identity. In his 2024 campaign, he recorded 569 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He also demonstrated versatility by adding 340 receiving yards and one touchdown through the air.
