The heavy burden of a footballing dynasty
In short: For Zach Merrett, greatness was written in his DNA long before his AFL debut. Born into a family with deep VFL/AFL roots, he transformed a prestigious pedigree into a career defined by relentless ball-winning and a controversial, hard-fought departure from his original club.
The Merrett name is synonymous with Australian rules football excellence. Zach is a second cousin, once removed, to Roger Merrett, a dual-premiership player for Essendon and the Brisbane Bears. His family tree extends further into the sport's history, including connections to Collingwood's Thorold Merrett and the 1960s Geelong premiership twins, Alistair and Stewart Lord.
Drafted by Essendon in 2013 with the 26th overall selection, Merrett quickly established himself as an elite midfielder. He achieved major early-career feats, including being the first person in 35 years to claim the W.S. Crichton Medal. Crichton Medal in 2016. He proved his resilience through various challenges, including a major foot stress fracture in 2015 and a concussion in 2018 that led to intense defensive tagging.
Despite his individual brilliance—including three All-Australian selections and seven Crichton Medals—his tenure at Essendon ended in significant friction. After serving as captain from 2023 to 2025, Merrett was involved in tense trade negotiations. Although Essendon initially refused to trade him, he eventually secured a move to Hawthorn following the 2026 season in exchange for multiple draft picks.
Today, Merrett remains a formidable force in the AFL. Known for his ability to win the ball at the source and his penetrating left-foot passing, he continues to demonstrate the high-level decision-making that made him a standout prospect in the 2013 draft pool.
