The rare dual-threat rookie rewriting the Oakland Athletics record books
In short: In his first 25 Major League games, Zack Gelof achieved what no player in the Modern Era has done: hitting eight home runs while stealing at least six bases. This explosive combination of power and speed has turned the 23-year-old second baseman into one of baseball's most dynamic young talents.
Zack Gelof’s ascent to Major League Baseball has been defined by a rare blend of power and speed. Following his time playing college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers, the Oakland Athletics selected Gelof during the 2021 MLB draft's second round, where he secured a $1,157,400 signing bonus. His professional career began in earnest in 2023, when he made his MLB debut on July 14, becoming the 17th Jewish player to play in the majors that year.
Gelof's impact was immediate and statistically historic. He became the fastest player in Oakland Athletics history to reach six home runs, achieving the feat in just 22 games. He also set a franchise record by recording 33 extra-base hits in his first 60 games. He proved his versatile impact on the game by becoming the first Modern Era player—since 1900—to record at least eight home runs and six stolen bases within his initial 25 career games.
Despite facing challenges, such as a right hamate bone fracture in 2024 that required surgery, Gelof has maintained a high level of production. Gelof was just the third player in Athletics history to achieve at least 10 stolen bases and 10 home runs during each of his first two major league seasons. His versatility and athleticism, noted by Athletics assistant general manager Billy Owens, continue to make him a focal point of the team's roster as he climbs the professional ladder.
