The self-taught heavy metal legend who mastered the guitar by ear alone
In short: He cannot identify a single chord or tune his own instrument, yet he was voted the world's best metal guitarist. Discover how Zachary James Baker bypassed formal training and official lessons, instead using his ears to master the guitar by mimicking the legendary albums that shaped his heavy metal career.
Born in Olympia, Washington, on December 11, 1981, Zachary James Baker—known professionally as Zacky Vengeance—built a career on intuition rather than instruction. As a co-founder of Avenged Sevenfold, the heavy metal guitarist Baker asserts he has never received any official instruction. Instead, he developed his technique by listening to and mimicking his favorite albums, citing legends like Slash, Dimebag Darrell, and members of Slayer and Rancim as his true teachers.
This ear-first approach defines his musical identity. In a 2017 interview with Ultimate Guitar, Baker admitted a lack of theoretical knowledge, stating he could not identify the components of an A chord or tune his guitar to a specific pitch without a technician's help. Despite this, his proficiency is undeniable; he has demonstrated capability in fingerstyle guitar and, in 2016, was recognized by Total Guitar as the Best Metal Guitarist in the World alongside bandmate Synyster Gates.
His gear reflects his heavy metal roots. While he began with a right-handed Yamaha acoustic, he is most closely associated with Schecter signature models, specifically the S-1. These guitars often feature a unique '6661' decal—the year Avenged Sevenfold formed, 1999, written upside down and backwards. As his career has evolved, so has his output, moving from early punk bands like Society Down and MPA* to solo endeavors, including the 2025 release of his debut single 'Dark Horse' under his given name.
