How a selfie accident nearly derailed a rising football star's career
In short: In May 2025, Dutch footballer Zakaria Eddahchouri was making a name for himself in Spain. However, his rapid rise faced a sudden crisis when a selfie attempt near the A Coruña waterfront resulted in a dangerous fall, requiring a maritime rescue helicopter to assist him after the accident.
Zakaria Eddahchouri, a Dutch professional footballer of Moroccan descent, has become a notable figure in the Spanish Segunda División. Born on 11 May 2000, his career trajectory saw him move from the Dutch Eerste Divisie with clubs like Go Ahead Eagles and Telstar to his current role with Deportivo de La Coruña. He enjoyed a highly productive stint at Telstar, finishing as the Eerste Divisie's leading scorer during the second phase with 17 goals from 23 matches.
His transition to Spanish football in early 2025 was marked by immediate impact and a strange turn of events. After signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with Deportivo on 30 January 2025, he scored his first goal for the club on 10 February in a 3–1 win over Almería. His progress faced a short setback on 17 May 2025, when a helicopter rescue was needed after he tumbled onto rocks while taking a selfie by the A Coruña waterfront. He was hospitalized overnight but discharged the following day.
Despite the accident, Eddahchouri demonstrated remarkable resilience. He achieved significant milestones during the 2025–26 season, including a spectacular hat-trick against Mirandés on 13 September 2025, where he scored three goals in just 16 minutes. Such an outing secured him the September 2025 Segunda División Player of the Month award. His ability to adapt to the tactical demands of head coach Óscar Gilsanz, who praised him as a 'different kind of striker,' has solidified his reputation as a versatile attacking threat.
