In short: Zion Williamson arrived in the NBA as a once-in-a-generation athlete, capable of dominating games with unmatched strength. Yet, despite his prolific scoring, a series of unusual and persistent injuries has prevented him from playing even half of his team's games.

Born on July 6, 2000, in Salisbury, North Carolina, Williamson’s path to stardom was marked by intense discipline. By age nine, he was waking up at 5 a.m. for daily running and shooting drills. Raised in South Carolina by parents who were both former college athletes, his skills were further honed by his stepfather, Lee Anderson, a former Clemson basketball player, who trained him as a point guard.

His ascent through the ranks was meteoric. At Spartanburg Day School, he transitioned from guard to forward, leading his team to three consecutive state championships and averaging 32 points per game during his high school career. By 2018, he had committed to Duke University, where he became a national sensation. His single season at Duke was decorated with honors, including the Naismith and Wooden Awards, and he was named the Associated Press Player of the Year.

However, his professional trajectory has been complicated by physical setbacks. A bizarre incident in February 2019 saw his Nike sneaker fall apart during a game against North Carolina, resulting in a knee injury. Since being selected as the number one overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 NBA draft, injuries have been frequent. He missed his entire third season due to a foot injury and faced hamstring issues in subsequent years. By the end of his fourth NBA season, he had appeared in only 114 games, representing just 37 percent of the Pelicans' total schedule.
