From a South African banana farm to the heights of heavy metal
In short: Before he was a Grammy-nominated frontman, ZP Theart was a child in the Transvaal using a tablespoon as a microphone. His journey from South African pop influences to the epic power metal of DragonForce is a remarkable tale of musical evolution and global ambition.
Born on 27 May 1974 in Clanwilliam, South Africa, ZP Theart’s early musical landscape was shaped by the sounds of the Eastern Transvaal. Growing up on a banana and lychee farm, his childhood repertoire included South African artists like Rina Hugo and Gé Korsten. However, the introduction of international cassette tapes—featuring synth-pop acts like Depeche Mode and A-ha—eventually paved the way for his passion for hard rock legends like Bon Jovi and Skid Row.
Theart’s professional ascent began in the mid-1s990s with South African bands Schrapnel and Santaria. Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to London in 1998. This move led to the formation of DragonForce, a band that would achieve global recognition, including a Grammy nomination for 'Heroes of Our Time'. During his tenure, the band saw significant success, with the 2006 album Inhuman Rampage reaching gold status.
Theart’s career has been defined by high-profile transitions and creative shifts. After leaving DragonForce in 2010 due to 'insurmountable differences of musical opinion,' he fronted bands such as Tank and the American hard rock group Skid Row, where he was officially named lead vocalist in 2017. He also ventured into technological innovation with his band I Am I, which became the first heavy metal group to release an album, Event Horizon, initially on USB.
Beyond the stage, Theart’s voice has reached digital audiences through Riot Games, providing the vocals for the character Karthus in the League of Legends soundtrack. Despite periods of hiatus and sudden departures from major bands, his recent work shows a prolific resurgence, including collaborations with musicians like Paul Di'Anno and the production of anniversary re-imaginings of his classic metal anthems.
