In short: Gedun Gyatso, the second Dalai Lama, was more than a spiritual leader; he was the architect of a tradition. By discovering the sacred lake of Lhamo Latso and establishing a ritual for seeking visions, he created the enduring mechanism used to identify the reincarnations of the Dalai Lama lineage.

Born in 1475 in the Tsang region of central Tibet, Gedun Gyatso was identified as the reincarnation of Gendun Drupa, the first Dalai Lama, during his childhood. His early life was marked by a deep connection to the monastic world; by age four, he reportedly expressed a desire to reside at Tashilhunpo Monastery, which his predecessor had founded in 1447. He was formally enthroned as the reincarnation at age eleven, though he later faced internal controversies that prompted his move to Drepung Monastery in Lhasa.

Gedun Gyatso’s influence on the Gelugpa school was profound. As a renowned scholar and poet, he expanded the order's reach and served as abbot for the three major monasteries: Tashilhunpo, Drepung, and Sera. In 1518, he revived the Monlam Chenmo, or Great Prayer Festival, a significant event that united monks from the primary Gelug institutions. His intellectual breadth was notable, as he studied both Gelugpa and Nyingma-pa tantric doctrines, reflecting a synthesis of traditions that helped solidify his authority.

Perhaps his most lasting contribution was the institutionalization of the search for future incarnations. He identified the sacredness of Lake Lhamo Latso, a site believed to be protected by the guardian spirit Palden Lhamo. By founding Chokorgyel Monastery nearby in 1509, he established a practice where monks could meditate to receive visions, a method that became the standard for selecting subsequent Dalai Lamas. He remained active until his death in 1542, passing away while in deep meditation at the age of 67.
