In short: Tasked with determining which of the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva—was supreme, the sage Bhrigu subjected each to a provocative test. His final encounter in Vaikuntha, involving a physical strike, revealed a profound truth about divine nature and forever altered the course of Hindu mythology and the status of Lakshmi.

Bhrigu, a mind-born son of Brahma and one of the seven great sages known as the Saptarshi, occupies a central role in Hindu tradition. Beyond his status as a progenitor, he is credited as the first compiler of predictive astrology, authoring the classic Bhrigu Samhita. His influence extends through a vast lineage, including his son Shukra, the guru of the asuras, and his descendant Parashurama, an avatar of Vishnu. His life is marked by intense interactions with the divine, ranging from his philosophical inquiries into the nature of Brahman with his father Varuni to his legendary role as a cosmic arbiter.

The most famous account of Bhrigu’s discernment involves his mission to test the Trimurti. Seeking to identify the supreme deity, he visited Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu. He tested Brahma’s patience by withholding respect and challenged Shiva by mocking social conventions. However, it was his arrival at Vaikuntha that proved decisive. Finding Vishnu resting, Bhrigu kicked the god in the chest. Rather than retaliating, Vishnu greeted the sage and began massaging his feet, fearing the sage had been injured by the contact. Overwhelmed by this display of humility, Bhrigu declared Vishnu the greatest of the three.

This act had lasting consequences, as Lakshmi, Vishnu’s consort, was reportedly offended by the perceived insult to her place on Vishnu’s chest. She left Vaikuntha to be reborn on earth as Padmavati, a legend deeply tied to the temple at Tirupati. Bhrigu’s legacy is further defined by his commitment to introspection. In the Tattiriya Upanishad, his pursuit of spiritual self-knowledge emphasizes peeling away the outer layers of reality to reach the innermost kernel of truth. Whether through his astrological contributions or his role in shaping the hierarchy of the gods, Bhrigu remains a pivotal figure in the exploration of existence and divinity.
