The world's most sacred tree is a survivor that has been replanted for millennia.
In short: The Bodhi tree, a sacred fig in Bodh Gaya, India, marks the spot where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment around the 5th century BCE. Though the original tree has long since perished, its lineage has been preserved through centuries of destruction and renewal, creating a global network of living, venerated descendants.
The Bodhi tree is a Ficus religiosa, recognizable by its heart-shaped leaves, which symbolize spiritual awakening in Buddhist iconography. According to tradition, Gautama Buddha reached Sambodhi—full enlightenment—while meditating beneath one such tree around 528 BCE. The site, known as the Mahabodhi Temple, has served as a shrine since the Buddha's own lifetime. Emperor Ashoka, a key patron of the faith, later formalized the site by constructing a stone balustrade and temple complex.
The history of the tree is one of repeated loss and restoration. It has been felled or destroyed multiple times, including by Queen Tissarakkhā around 254 BCE and King Śaśāṅka around 600 CE. Despite these setbacks, the tree was consistently replanted. A pivotal moment occurred in 288 BCE when Emperor Ashoka sent a sapling to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, via his daughter, Sanghamittā Therī. Known as the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, this specimen is considered the oldest human-planted tree with a verified date, serving as a vital genetic reservoir for the species.
The current tree at the Mahabodhi Temple was planted in 1881 by British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham, using a cutting from the Sri Lankan descendant. The tree's influence has since spread globally, with saplings gifted to countries including Vietnam, Brazil, Australia, and the United States. Today, the tree remains central to Buddhist practice, commemorated annually on Bodhi Day. Beyond its religious significance, the tree's legacy of resilience continues to be managed through modern conservation efforts, ensuring that this living monument to the Buddha's awakening persists for future generations.
