The elegant, ornate, and often misunderstood world of Ancient Egyptian scripts
In short: While we often associate Ancient Egypt with hieroglyphics, these elaborate symbols were rarely used for daily business. This video explores the distinction between these decorative characters and the more practical scripts used for everyday life.
Hieroglyphics served as elegant symbols that adorned the tombs and temples of pharetahs. However, because of their ornate nature, other scripts were typically employed for day-to-day communication. One such precursor to Coptic was demotic, a script used in Egypt until the 1000s. These various writing systems functioned much like different modern fonts, ranging from the formal to the highly decorative.
