The wandering sadhu who became a global spiritual icon for millions
In short: Born as Lakshman Narayan Sharma in rural India, the man known as Neem Karoli Baba left a settled life to wander as a sadhu. His message of love and selfless service eventually transcended borders, drawing Western seekers and inspiring foundations that continue his legacy of devotion and meditation today.
Neem Karoli Baba, affectionately called Maharaj-ji by his followers, remains one of the most influential spiritual figures of 20th-century India. Born around 1900 in the village of Akbarpur, he initially followed a conventional path, marrying at age 11 and fathering three children. However, his life took a radical turn when he abandoned his domestic responsibilities to wander Northern India as a sadhu, eventually becoming a devoted follower of Lord Hanuman.
His spiritual reputation grew from his time in the village of Neem Karoli, where he was said to perform documented miracles. This period defined his identity, leading to the establishment of major ashrams at Kainchi and Vrindavan. The Kainchi Dham, founded in 1964, became a central hub for his teachings and remains a site of pilgrimage, marked annually by a large fair on June 15. Over 100 temples were eventually constructed in his name, reflecting his widespread impact.
The reach of his influence expanded significantly into the West, largely through the experiences of American devotees who traveled to India. Figures like Ram Dass and Larry Brilliant were instrumental in carrying his philosophy forward, founding organizations like the Seva Foundation to emphasize his core tenet of selfless service. His legacy is now preserved through various media, including documentaries like One Track Heart and American Yogi, as well as modern foundations that continue to offer guided meditation based on his teachings.
Neem Karoli Baba passed away on September 11, 1973, following a diabetic coma after a journey to seek medical attention for chest pains. His final moments were marked by the repetition of the phrase Jaya Jagadish Hare. Today, his life is commemorated not only through his original ashrams but also through international centers and biographical dramas, ensuring that his message of simplicity and love continues to resonate with new generations of seekers.
