In short: In the ancient Greek world, a mysterious religious tradition believed humanity was born from the literal remains of a murdered god. This Orphic myth suggests our very bodies are composed of the debris left behind after a divine tragedy, trapping a divine spark within a material prison.

Orphism, a set of religious beliefs and practices from the ancient Greek and Hellen/Hellenistic worlds, centers on a profound myth of duality. According to this tradition, the infant god Dionysus (or Zagreus) was killed and consumed by the Titans. In response, Zeus struck the Titans with a thunderbolt, reducing them to ash. From these ashes, humanity was born, inheriting a dual nature: the physical body (sôma) from the Titans, and a divine soul (psukhḗ) from Dionysus.

This cosmic tragedy created a cycle of suffering. The Orphics believed that because of this Titanic lineage, the soul was held in bondage by material existence. To escape the 'wheel of rebirth' and the cycle of reincarnation, initiates had to undergo teletē—a ritual purification and a reliving of the god's death. Without such initiation, the uninitiated were believed to be reincarnated indefinitely.

The origins of Orphic literature are debated, with traces appearing as early as the 6th or 5th century BC. The Derveni papyrus, dating to approximately 340 BC, provides a vital window into these complex cosmologies, including the 'Derveni Theogony.' While some scholars see Orphism as a reform of Dionysian religion, others note its deep connections to Pythagoreanism. Some even argued that Pythagoras himself was an Orphic initiate or the author of Orphic poems, though contemporary 5th-century authors often viewed Orpheus as a purely mythological figure.

The tradition also left behind practical instructions for the afterlife. Gold-leaf tablets found in graves from places like Crete and Thessaly (dating to the 4th century BC and later) provided the deceased with formulas to navigate the underworld. These instructions urged travelers to avoid the pool of Lethe (Forgetfulness) and instead seek the waters of Mnemosyne (Memory) to ensure their spiritual survival.
