Can the human physical form dissolve into pure light?
In short: In the ancient Tibetan tradition of Dzogchen, certain masters are said to achieve the 'rainbow body.' This profound state of realization involves the transmutation of the physical body into light, leaving behind nothing but a memory of brilliance and, occasionally, a few stray fingernails.
The concept of the rainbow body, or 'ja lü' in Tibetan, describes a level of spiritual realization where the physical body undergoes a total metamorphosis. Rootting in the pre-Buddhist Bon religion and later integrated into Vajrayana teachings, this phenomenon is centered on the achievement of 'rigpa'—a state of complete knowledge characterized by the absence of delusion and clinging. Practitioners utilize specific esoteric methods, such as 'tögal' practices, to facilitate this transformation.
The mechanics of this attainment rely on balancing three distinct wisdoms: 'kadag' (primordial purity), 'lhun grub' (spontaneous presence), and 'thugs rje' (compassion). In the Dzogchen tradition, the fundamental practice involves learning to distinguish 'rigpa,' the natural state, from 'sems,' the ordinary mind. When the 'four visions' of the tögal practice are successfully completed before death, the physical body may self-liberate into a 'Sambhogakāya,' or a non-material body of light.
Observers of this process often report a shrinking effect, where the dying person appears to vanish into light, frequently leaving behind only hair, fingernails, or toenails. However, a more advanced state exists known as the 'Rainbow Body of Great Transference' (jalu powa chemo). In this exceptional case, the practitioner does not leave any physical remnants behind and does not undergo a traditional death. Instead, they achieve a state where they can exist and abide anywhere, guided by their compassion. Historical accounts, such as those found in Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen's 'Heart Drops of Dharmakaya,' document students whose bodies visibly shrank amidst appearing rainbows at the moment of death.
