In short: In Chinese culture, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism are often viewed as a single, harmonious tapestry. While they offer vastly different views on life—ranging from strict social hierarchies to mystical non-action and the cycle of rebirth—they have coexisted for centuries, creating a unique philosophical landscape where diversity is seen as a source of strength.

The 'Three Teachings' (sānjiào) represent a complex synthesis of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. While they are often treated as a harmonious aggregate, their historical relationship has been dynamic. During various eras, emperors would favor one system while discriminating against others. For instance, during the Song dynasty, Neo-Confucianism became the dominant philosophy, largely as a move to create a more rationalist, secular framework that rejected the mystical elements of Taoism and Buddhism, as well as the concepts of karma and reincarnation.

Each teaching occupies a distinct niche in the Chinese worldview. Confucianism served as the ideology for the ruling class and law, emphasizing social roles, filial piety (xiao), and humaneness (ren). In contrast, Taoism was the worldview of radical intellectuals and the rural populace, focusing on harmony with the Dao (the Way) and the principle of 'wu wei'—an in-between state of 'being, but not acting.' Buddhism introduced the concepts of karma, rebirth, and the pursuit of Nirvana by breaking away from material attachments.

Despite these differences, the concept of 'three teachings harmonious as one' reflects a long history of mutual influence. Some scholars argue that these systems are fundamentally incomparable and mutually exclusive, while others see them as complementary. This synthesis is even visible in physical spaces, such as the Hanging Temple, where joint worship occurs. The aggregate suggests that for many, using elements from all three provides a more complete, and perhaps 'safer,' path to good fortune and self-cultivation.
