Listen to the ancient chants of the New York Buddhist Vihara monks

The New York Buddhist Vihara Monks · 30:27 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: This video captures Buddhist monks from the New York Buddhist Vihara Foundation performing a traditional blessing of suttas. These chants, preserved through the Sri Lankan tradition as the spoken word of the Buddha, were recorded for an immersive exhibition at The Met.

The recording features the voices of monks, including Ven. Aluthgama Dhammajothi Thero, whose chants were integrated into the exhibition's stupa. This installation allowed visitors to experience the sacred sounds within a physical space dedicated to Buddhist architecture and tradition.

The exhibition, which showcased these preserved teachings, was open to the public from July 21st through November 13th, 2023. By bringing the oral tradition of the Sri Lankan lineage into a museum setting, the project highlighted the enduring significance of these ancient spoken words.
